TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - A 34-year-old Gardner man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a man earlier this year in Topeka.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1rMdTC8 ) that Michael Dean Engstrom pleaded guilty in April to felony first-degree murder and attempted intentional second-degree murder tied to the February death of 35-year-old Ricky Mitchell.

Shawnee County District Court Judge Richard Anderson sentenced Engstrom last week to life in prison with parole eligibility after 20 years. He was also sentenced to about five years for shooting at and wounding a 28-year-old woman.

The two terms in Shawnee County are to run concurrently with sentences Engstrom received in two Nebraska cases.
