MILFORD, Conn. (AP) - A man fatally shot another man and then climbed onto the roof of a nearby home and fired at police before killing himself on Wednesday, authorities said.

Milford police said Michael Savignano, 56, was found on the lawn of a house on Hollywood Avenue with a gunshot wound to the chest. Police said Vincent Edwards, 48, ran to nearby Midway Avenue and climbed onto the roof of his residence and fired a shot at police before taking his own life.

Police believe Edwards shot Savignano, Police Chief Keith Mello said. Authorities believe Savignano, whose last known address is in Shelton, was shot somewhere else and made it to the lawn where he fell, Mello said.

Edwards was pronounced dead at the scene, and Savignano was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police believe the two men knew each other. The motives for the killing and the suicide were unclear.

The afternoon shootings led to a brief lock-in at nearby Jonathan Law High School.
