NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Officials say a 72-year-old man has died in southern Tennessee where his vehicle was swept downstream as he apparently tried to cross a flooded roadway.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol say Gerald Ralph Barr died in Lawrenceburg on Thursday morning.

WSMV-TV said a search was underway in Hickman County for a 6- or 7-year-old child missing after a car became stuck in water Thursday afternoon.

Tennessee declared a state of emergency in anticipation of potential severe weather and flooding in the coming days. The declaration activates the governor’s emergency powers and starts up the State Emergency Operations Center.

About 30,000 people were without power in Shelby County on Thursday afternoon. There were reports of downed trees and power lines, blocking some roads.
