MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - The Free Fishing Weekend planned for Saturday at Lost Creek Lake has been canceled because of a blue-green algae bloom.

The Mail Tribune reports (https://is.gd/lgw242 ) that the Oregon Health Authority issued an advisory this week for the lake that’s the largest body of water in Jackson County.

During advisories, people and pets are asked to avoid contact with the water, but compliance is voluntary.

No confirmed human illnesses have been tied directly to an algae outbreak in Oregon. However, at least four dogs have died in recent years from toxins in water near the Umpqua River near Elkton.

Though the free-fishing event has been nixed, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife this week plans to release 5,250 rainbow trout at Lose Creek Lake.
