BEND, Ore. (AP) - Defense attorneys for a Central Oregon man accused of murder in the death of a houseguest told jurors during opening statements the shooting was in self-defense.

The Bend Bulletin reports (https://is.gd/kxa5bp ) that defense attorney Walter Todd said David Ryder forcibly sodomized Luke Wirkkala before Wirkkala shot Ryder in the neck.

The shooting occurred Feb. 4, 2013. The two men, along with Wirkkala’s girlfriend, had spent the previous day drinking and watching the Super Bowl.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Mary Anderson said in her opening statement that DNA evidence indicates there likely had been sexual contact. But she told jurors Wednesday that Wirkkala “knew what he did” and asked the jury to hold him accountable for Ryder’s death.

The 31-year-old Ryder was married and had a 2-year-old son.
