DETROIT (AP) - Mayor Mike Duggan in Detroit has joined dozens of other mayors and elected officials across the country in an effort to find permanent housing by 2015 for homeless military veterans.

First lady Michelle Obama announced the “Mayors Challenge to End Veteran Homelessness” at the White House on Thursday.

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton is among more than 75 elected leaders who have joined the challenge.

They’ve pledged to use federal, local and nonprofit resources to get veterans off the streets.

Resources available include a Department of Housing and Urban Development program that offers rental vouchers to help house about 10,000 veterans.

The department says the Obama Administration already has reduced veteran homelessness by about a quarter since 2010.
