FLINT, Mich. (AP) - The public school district in Flint is laying off 250 employees as part of a $10.4 deficit elimination plan.

The Flint Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1j0Oknz ) the employees include secretarial, maintenance, food service and school safety workers. Plans call for outsourcing some work.

No teachers are included in the list. Interim Superintendent Larry Watkins says the district faced a June 30 deadline because of its deficit elimination plan.

Watkins says the layoffs will save the district $5 million.

Deborah Wright has worked for the district for 34 years in the area of labor and setup and was laid off Wednesday. She says she knows that the district must downsize, but there was hope that “some of us would still be around to see some of the changes.”
