HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Former Democratic state Rep. Jonathan Pelto has received the official go-ahead to begin collecting the signatures needed to be a petitioning candidate for governor.

The Secretary of the State’s Office on Thursday authorized Pelto to petition his way onto the November ballot as a member of the newly formed Education and Democracy Party. Pelto, who was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1984 and served until 1994, must collect 7,500 signatures by Aug. 6.

Pelto has been a critic of Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, especially his education reform initiatives.

Pelto announced Thursday that a Hartford educator, Ebony Murphy, will be his running mate on the Education and Democracy Party ticket. She is currently teaching middle school at the Calhoun School in New York City.
