COMPTON, Calif. (AP) - A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy wounded during a confrontation with a cyclist was a victim of friendly fire.

The Sheriff’s Department said Thursday that the deputy was shot in the upper torso by his partner on May 26 in Compton.

The deputy’s names weren’t released and it’s unclear whether the shooter will face any discipline.

The shooting occurred after the deputies tried to pull over a man on a bicycle. He sped away, leading to a short chase that ended with a fight as deputies tried to arrest him.

Authorities say the deputy and the suspect, 23-year-old Noel Aguilar, were shot when Aguilar tried to take a deputy’s gun. He died at the scene.
