NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) - Two girls not old enough to legally drive have been arrested on suspicion of stealing a vehicle and assaulting officers who tried to stop them.

Police tell the North Platte Telegraph (https://bit.ly/1kNxKr7 ) that the girls, ages 12 and 13, were arrested Tuesday night after they were found trying to fill up a stolen minivan at a gas station.

The girls had been reported missing earlier Tuesday by their respective families.

Police spokesman Rodney Brown says the girls resisted being taken into custody and assaulted officers who spotted the stolen van late Tuesday night.

Brown says the 13-year-old girl was released to a parent. The 12-year-old girl is being held in a juvenile detention center.
