PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A man who allegedly struck and killed a Philadelphia woman and her three young sons while drag racing has been sentenced to 27 months behind bars in an unrelated ambulance fraud case.

The defendant, 23-year-old Khusen Akhmedov (KOO’-sen OCK’-muh-dov), pleaded guilty in federal court in December to involvement in a Medicare fraud of more than $1.5 million. Prosecutors said he recruited non-emergency patients for ambulance trips and promised them kickback payments.

Akhmedov still faces murder charges in the July 16 crash.

He is charged with killing Samara Banks and her three sons - ages 4, 23 months and 7 months - as they crossed a north Philadelphia roadway.

Defense attorney Todd Henry disputes his client was drag racing.
