ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - An independent commission meets in early August to recommend lawyers to Gov. Susana Martinez for possible appointment to an upcoming judicial vacancy.

A bipartisan Judicial Nominating Commission will screen applicants interested in the 5th Judicial District Court judgeship.

District Judge Charles Currier of Roswell is retiring and his position becomes vacant effective Aug. 2.

Lawyers have until July 29 to submit applications and the commission is to meet Aug. 7 at the Chaves County courthouse in Roswell to decide who to recommend to the governor.

The panel’s meeting is open to the public.

The commission is made up of judges, lawyers and members of the public.
