COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A former Richland County jail officer has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for killing his pregnant fiancee and setting her body on fire.

Tristan Gist, 24, was sentenced Wednesday in a plea agreement in the March 2013 killing of Dierra Fisher, 22, The State newspaper (https://bit.ly/1heeNmg) reported.

Prosecutor Meghan Walker said Gist shot Fisher in the head while she was asleep in the couple’s apartment.

Authorities say Gist put Fisher’s body in a truck and took it to a secluded spot near a Richland County landfill and set the body on fire.

Prosecutors say the couple had argued and Gist was depressed they he could not afford to buy a house. Gist told investigators that Fisher had threatened to leave and take two preschool-age children with her.

The children were sleeping in the next room. They were not hurt.

Gist apologized before he was sentenced.

“I hate that I done it. If I could take it back, I would. I made the biggest mistake of my life, and I want to apologize to everybody,” he said.

Gist had worked at the jail from May 2012 until his arrest in March 2013.
