CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - The UNC Center for Civil Rights is scheduled to hold a free legal clinic in Charlotte to help victims of North Carolina’s forced sterilization program file claims.

The clinic is set for Thursday at Little Rock AME Zion Church. The center held clinics last month in Greenville and Raleigh, and will hold a fourth one on June 12 in Ahoskie. The deadline to file claims is June 30.

Last year, the Legislature set aside $10 million for one-time payments to North Carolina’s sterilization victims. The final amount paid to each individual depends on how many come forward.

North Carolina sterilized about 7,600 people it deemed feeble-minded or otherwise undesirable between 1929 and 1974. Most were either forced or coerced into having the procedure.

Some victims were as young as 10.
