OAKLAND PARK, Fla. (AP) - Broward County Sheriff’s Office detectives say a 26-year-old man faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of his teenage girlfriend.

Officials believe jealousy may have played a role in the death of 17-year-old Amaya Cruz, who was last seen alive around 4 a.m. Wednesday. Boyfriend Bobby Scott Jr. was arrested Thursday afternoon.

Detectives say Cruz had been arguing via text messages with Scott. They believe Scott confronted her outside her home, killing her just feet from her front door. Scott knocked on the door that morning looking for her, but her brother said she wasn’t home. A few moments later he banged on the door, asking the family to call 911 because he’d found her injured.

Cruz was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy revealed blunt force trauma.
