ARMADA, Mich. (AP) - A former southeastern Michigan science teacher charged with having a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old student has been jailed on a $400,000 cash bond.

Robert Yaek was arraigned Friday on first-degree criminal sexual conduct, using a computer to commit a crime, possession of child sexually abusive material and distributing sexually explicit material to children charges.

Defense attorney Paul Stablein had requested a smaller bond to allow Yaek to be released from jail while awaiting a June 18 preliminary examination.

Police and prosecutors say the 25-year-old Yaek had sexual encounters with the seventh-grade girl between February and May. Prosecutors say Yaek also sent explicit photographs of himself to the girl’s cellphone.

Yaek of Richmond Township taught at Armada Middle School in northern Macomb County. He has resigned.
