FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - Police say a man has died after he was hit by car while walking on a Fort Wayne street.

City police spokesman Officer Chris Felton says the driver stopped and waited for officers to arrive after hitting the man on a street east of the city’s downtown late Thursday.

The pedestrian was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died.

Felton says the driver told investigators he didn’t see the man before hitting him along a dark section of street.

It wasn’t clear why the man was walking on the street. The man’s name wasn’t immediately released.
