EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A man who accused four Cottage Grove police officers of using excessive force has lost his lawsuit in federal court in Eugene.

The jury this week rejected claims from Matthew Waggoner that police tackled him, causing a knee injury, and that one of the officers kicked him. He sought $624,000 in damages.

A lawyer representing police told The Register-Guard (https://bit.ly/1nnw7Fe ) it was a frivolous lawsuit.

Police had responded to a report of a possible burglary in December 2010 when Waggoner was seen attempting to break into a house. Waggoner said he had locked himself out of a friend’s home and was trying to enter to retrieve his cellphone.

Waggoner spent four days in jail but charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest were later dismissed.
