MONTROSE, Colo. (AP) - A 16-year-old Montrose boy has drowned in the potholes in Escalante Canyon.

The (Grand Junction) Daily Sentinel reports that the boy drowned Thursday and was not immediately identified (https://bit.ly/TlZPA2 ).

The potholes are pools of water that have been carved in Escalante Canyon. Delta County Sheriff Fred McKee says water levels are abnormally high because of spring runoff.

The sheriff says swimming conditions are extremely dangerous.

Two other boys who were swimming with the teen survived and have been released to their parents.
