ROANOKE, W.Va. (AP) - The search is continuing for a new West Virginia schools superintendent.

The state Board of Education heard from an educational executive leadership search company during its executive session Thursday at Stonewall Resort in Lewis County.

Ray and Associates Inc. told the board that it engaged with 248 individuals regarding the position. Ultimately 64 candidates representing 43 different states submitted completed applications.

Officials say the state board has narrowed that pool and will continue the search process for the next head of the state’s school system.

Current superintendent James Phares is retiring June 30.
