WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Prosecutors plan to seek a death sentence if a Winston-Salem man is convicted of killing a woman last year.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported (https://bit.ly/1mkefrx) that Superior Court Judge John Craig on Thursday approved prosecutors’ request to seek a death sentence against 22-year-old Anthony Vinh Nguyen.

Nguyen is one of three men charged in the shooting and robbery of 43-year-old Shelia Pace Gooden last Oct. 11.

A grand jury indicted Nguyen, 23-year-old Daniel Aaron Benson and 22-yearold Steve George Assimos on charges of first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, first-degree kidnapping and armed robbery.

Court filings indicate that Forsyth County prosecutors think Nguyen was the shooter. Prosecutors have not indicated any intent to pursue the death penalty against Benson and Assimos.
