RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - An off-duty Rapid City firefighter who had recently completed swift-water rescue training put the new skills to use when a 7-year-old boy slipped and fell into Rapid Creek.

Authorities say the current pinned the boy against a downed tree and pulled him under the water on Thursday. The firefighter jumped in and pulled the boy to safety.

The boy was taken to a hospital to be evaluated. The firefighter who saved him wasn’t named.
