RIDGEWAY, S.C. (AP) - Veterans are being encouraged to come to a historic South Carolina town and celebrate the 70th anniversary of the World War II D-Day invasion of Normandy.

The parade in Ridgeway begins Friday at 6 p.m. Military veterans are encouraged to gather at the Cotton Yard by 5:30 p.m.

The anniversary celebrates the day on June 6, 1944, when the western allies invaded the German-held beaches of Normandy in France. It involved more than 156,000 troops from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Free France and Norway and paved the way for liberating western Europe from Nazi control.
