SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - A Spartanburg County woman has been convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of her husband nearly four years ago.

A jury on Thursday returned the guilty verdict against Caroline Mains for the death of Alan Manis at their home in Pacolet, the Herald-Journal of Spartanburg (https://bit.ly/1kGqT7q) reported.

Circuit Judge Roger Couch sentenced Manis to two years in prison. She was given credit for 46 days she had served.

She had been charged with murder but jurors returned the guilty verdict on the lesser charge.

Investigators said Alan Manis died after a shotgun was placed in his mouth and fired. Defense attorneys contended he killed himself.

Prosecutors said the woman told 911 dispatchers she “blew her husband’s head off.”

Caroline Manis apologized in court before she was sentenced.

The victim’s daughter, Stacy Manis, said the memories she has of her father will remain with her forever.

“He was the best man I’ve ever known,” she said.
