NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Family and friends gathered in North Little Rock for a send-off for about 160 members of the Arkansas National Guard’s 1038th Horizontal Construction Company.

The soldiers are heading first to Fort Bliss, Texas, for a month of training before being deployed to Kuwait for a nearly yearlong mission.

The unit is to work to improve roads, drainage systems and fortifications at U.S. bases in the Middle East.

Specialist Danarrius Broadway of Hughes told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (https://bit.ly/1k6KlFQ ) that this is his first deployment and that although he doesn’t want to leave his family he’s excited and can’t wait to go.

The unit includes combat engineers, equipment operators, maintenance and medical personnel.
