MINOT, N.D. (AP) - Sen. Heidi Heitkamp says the state needs more federal law enforcement agents to battle drug and human trafficking in the western portion of the state.

Heitkamp toured the northern border of the state and visited several law enforcement agencies Friday with Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware. Carper chairs the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

KXMC-TV in Minot reports (https://bit.ly/1kMo3z4) the FBI currently has five agents in Minot and four in Bismarck. The agency is hoping to add four more to Williston next year. A housing shortage prevented previous plans to add agents.

Minot Police Chief Jason Olson says western North Dakota also needs a DEA Agent. Olson says officers frequently seize pounds of methamphetamine. He says the drug is almost always imported from out of state.
