COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio will soon have a new state parks director.

Ohio Department of Natural Resources Director James Zehringer (ZAYR’-ihn-guhr) says Gary Obermiller will take over the job when director Glen Cobb retires at the end of June after 30 years.

Obermiller has been serving as chief of the department’s watercraft division. He’ll now serve as deputy director of state parks and watercraft. He’s been with the department in various roles for 28 years.

Ohio has 74 state parks. It’s one of only seven U.S. states where admission is free.

Last year, 2.3 million people spent at least one night at an Ohio state park campground, cottage, cabin or lodge.
