NEW YORK (AP) - Police say parking lots at the Belmont Stakes are filled up and closed to late-arriving drivers.

Nassau County police made the announcement around 5:50 p.m., Saturday about an hour before California Chrome was set to race for the Triple Crown.

They say lots at Belmont Park will only be open to taxis, limousines, and official cars using Gate 8.

Good weather and the allure of history could push the crowd past the record of 120,139 when Birdstone upset Triple Crown contender Smarty Jones in 2004.

Trains to Belmont were packed with fans wearing sunhats and fedoras and cars were bumper-to-bumper on a nearby parkway hours before the race.

California Chrome is the 12th horse to race at Belmont for the Triple Crown since Affirmed won it in 1978.
