FORT PIERCE, Fla. (AP) - Community leaders and police in Fort Pierce are trying to curb ongoing gun violence in their city.

The Fort Pierce Tribune (https://bit.ly/1kIRLDY ) reports that the city has had five shooting incidents in the past two weeks. Since the beginning of the year, 18 people have been hit and 7 killed in various shooting.

Police Chief Sean Baldwin said the incidents of gunfire are actually down over the same period last year, but that number of shootings is still too high.

He says the city is getting help from federal agencies with homicide investigations and that authorities are increasing neighborhood patrols now that school is out for the summer.

The community is working on efforts to fight gang activity and hopes to secure grant money to fight the violence.
