BRIDGEVILLE, Del. (AP) - A motorcyclist has died in a crash in Delaware while being chased by a Bridgeville police officer.

Delaware State Police say an officer tried to stop 33-year-old Melvin DeShields of Greenwood for speeding on Sussex Highway about 2:20 a.m. on Saturday. But investigators say DeShields refused to stop and sped away from the police vehicle.

Police say the motorcycle headed east on Redden Road and failed to negotiate a curve in the road. IT traveled off the roadway and struck a bridge guardrail. DeShields was ejected from the motorcycle. Police say it appears he was not wearing a helmet.

DeShields was taken to area hospitals and was later pronounced dead.

An investigation into the crash continues.
