LUNENBURG, Vt. (AP) - Vermont state police and fire investigators are looking to the cause of a Sunday morning fire that destroyed a house, killing three pet dogs who were trapped inside.

Police say a neighbor called in the fire at about 1:30 a.m. Firefighters arrived at the Gilman Village home to find it fully ablaze.

Officials say three occupants were able to get out safely but the dogs were not.

They estimate damages at about $40,000 and called the house a total loss.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
