Australian authorities searching for a 62-year-old man who disappeared from his boat have shot dead two crocodiles and opened their bellies, pulling human remains from inside the one that spanned more than 15 feet in length.

The remains were recovered and sent to the coroner for testing, but authorities believe they belong to the missing man, CNN reported.

Then man had been fishing aboard his boat with his son, wife and daughter-in-law on the South Alligator River in the Northern Territory’s Kakadu National Park, when he was reportedly snatched by a beast at a waterhole, CNN said. Family members saw the attack, but couldn’t save him.

Police and park rangers searched the area and found two crocodiles within a couple miles of where the man was last seen, CNN reported.

“This is a tragic event, and our thoughts are with the family during this very difficult time,” Cmdr. Bruce Porter of the Northern Command told CNN.

The man’s name has not yet been released.
