NEWTON, Ill. (AP) - The east-central Illinois city of Newton is talking about shrinking its government because census data show the need for fewer aldermen.

The Effingham Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/1uKeBhz ) that Newton Mayor Mark Bolander says the city needs to form an ad-hoc committee to talk about redistricting and reducing to six aldermen from eight.

U.S. Census data show the city’s population was 3,069 in 2000, falling to 2,849 in the 2010 census.

Newton is in Jasper County, about 25 miles southeast of Effingham.
