SARDINIA, N.Y. (AP) - A 36-year-old is in a western New York jail after authorities say he led sheriff’s deputies on a chase over rural roads that topped 140 mph.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy spotted Joseph Gambino of Springville, New York speeding around 8 p.m. Sunday and tried to pull him over in his hometown, located 30 miles south of Buffalo.

Officials say Gambino sped away and drove recklessly, passing cars on hillcrests and hitting 143 mph in a 45-mph zone.

Another deputy was eventually able to stop Gambino’s vehicle at an intersection in the neighboring town of Sardinia.

He was charged with reckless endangerment, unlawful fleeing police and numerous vehicle and traffic violations. Gambino is being held in the county jail. It was immediately clear if he has a lawyer.
