MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) - Police have charged a Martinsburg man with first-degree murder in the slaying of an elderly woman whose bound body was found in her home.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office tells media outlets that 38-year-old William Jackson was arrested Tuesday after investigators developed evidence that he possessed the victim’s bank card.

Police say 72-year-old Martha Tyler’s bank card was used more than 30 times after she died. A family member found her body on Saturday.

Police say Tyler’s hands were bound and there was a bag over her head. She died as a result of ligature strangulation and smothering.

Jackson is being held at the Eastern Regional Jail.
