LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - A Chinese-owned company is fighting to keep a $12.1 million contract to make electric buses for the city of Long Beach.

The Federal Transportation Administration contends that BYD - which stands for Build Your Dreams - wasn’t eligible for the contract it won last year because it didn’t provide information about working with subcontractors owned by minorities or women.

If the ruling’s upheld, Long Beach Transit couldn’t fund the contract with federal grants and might have to reopen bidding.

BYD attorney Lanny Davis tells the Los Angeles Times (https://lat.ms/1nEwezd ) that BYD made a “good-faith mistake” and has asked the U.S. transportation secretary to overrule the decision.

BYD executive Brendan Riley tells the Long Beach Press-Telegram (https://bit.ly/1qVXEQ0 ) that the company also is in discussions with Long Beach Transit about the contract.
