TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a Tempe infant is in critical condition after reportedly being mauled by her family’s dog.

Police say the 9-month-old child was mauled after being left alone for a brief time Tuesday afternoon.

When the mother found the girl bleeding from the head with the 95-pound Akita sitting next to her, she immediately picked up her child and attempted to drive her to a hospital.

The woman got into an accident with another vehicle, waved down another car and got the infant to Banner Desert Hospital.

Police say the child was treated at the pediatric emergency room for severe head injuries.

Tempe detectives are investigating the incident.

Police haven’t released the name of the mother or child.
