DETROIT (AP) - A Detroit-based company’s $37,500 donation will help fund the city police department’s unit of horses over the next year.

MLive.com reports (https://bit.ly/OAaWmD ) that the nonprofit Detroit Public Safety Foundation is relaying the donation from Strategic Staffing Solutions to the police department. The donation will pay for the horses’ hay, feed, vitamins, medications, bedding, vaccinations and other expenses.

The police department’s mounted unit includes five horses: Big Baby, Elmo, Ivan, Tiny and Vader.

The Detroit Public Safety Foundation says Strategic Staffing Solutions officials and police mounted unit Sgt. Erik Eide met in December at the foundation’s awards ceremony, leading to the donation. Strategic Staffing Solutions says the mounted unit is key to crime prevention and community engagement.
