PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A Portland man says he found a rat in his toilet bowl.

KGW-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1fN7738 ) Daniel Powers woke up in the middle of the night this week to the sound of scratching in his bathroom. He found the rat after lifting up his toilet lid.

Powers said he put a pile of books on top of the lid to keep the rat out. By morning the animal was gone.

According to the television station, officials at Multnomah County Vector Control respond to up to 30 calls about rats in toilets every year.

Randy Witten, owner of a Portland pest control business, says rain causes older sewer systems to flood, which can send the rats into side lines and eventually into homes.
