MAHWAH, N.J. (AP) - A missing horse is back in the barn following a nine-day search that spanned parts of New Jersey and New York.

Chief had bolted after he slipped on ice and his rider had dismounted on March 15.

The family that rescued the horse from a slaughterhouse searched by land and air for the animal.

Two consultants inspecting a fence about three miles from the barn spotted the horse on Monday. Robert Zappalorti tells The Record (https://bit.ly/OQtgYK ) newspaper Chief came right up to them and he fed the animal carrots and apricots for about 40 minutes until police arrived.

Denise Vulgaris says her family’s horse has a cough and some scrapes, but is in very good shape.
