YANKTON, S.D. (AP) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be opening the spillway gates of Gavins Point Dam for the first time this year.

The Yankton Daily Press and Dakotan (https://bit.ly/1jLgTqv ) reports the corps will open the gates to divert some of the releases in order to complete maintenance on the dam.

Eileen Williamson with the Corps of Engineers says the move will not affect flood control measures.

She says water that would normally be released through the powerhouse is going to be diverted to the spillways. She says the releases won’t make any difference upstream or downstream.

Repairs to the powerhouse are expected to be finished around mid-summer.

Officials say that although the change in releases is in method rather than amount, boating restrictions will be put in place.
