DALLAS (AP) - After Jan. 1, customers will have to pay Dallas retailers 5 cents each for single-use bags.

The Dallas City Council voted 8-6 Wednesday to levy the “environmental fee,” of which 10 percent will be kept by retailers. The rest would go to the city to pay for enforcement and education.

The new ordinance also would require retailers to register with the city and keep track of the single-use bags they sell. Retailers could still provide free multi-use bags.

The measure was a compromise with council member Dwaine Caraway, who had been seeking an outright ban on single-use bags for the past year.
