CENTREVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Officials with Field Memorial Hospital have started construction on a new $21 million medical center in Centreville in southwest Mississippi.

The new facility will be located on Mississippi Highway 24, two miles from the current downtown hospital. Ground was broken for the project Thursday.

Chief Executive Officer Chad Netterville tells The Natchez Democrat (https://bit.ly/1gZZC9u) the new hospital will have 16 hospital beds, down from 25, but will provide the same services it does now.

The expected date for the hospital staff to occupy the new building is October 2015.

Netterville says the design of the new building will also allow for the more efficient flow of staff and patient resources throughout the day.

Field Memorial Hospital opened in 1928.
