WARREN, Mich. (AP) - Warren police say a woman going through trash in a large bin outside a suburban-Detroit apartment complex found a human skull.

The Detroit Free Press reports that police Commissioner Jere Green says the skull found Wednesday is small and was partially inside a canvas bag. The trash container is at Warren Manor Apartments.

Lt. William Wilke tells The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens that the skull doesn’t appear to be that of a recent homicide victim and may have been in use as a teaching tool.

Police say they also found a doctor’s ID and a lab coat with a health care organization’s patch on it. Gere isn’t releasing their names.

Green says authorities will try to see if they can extract DNA to aid the investigation.
