BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Construction crews in Buffalo have uncovered a 1920 time capsule built into the foundation of a statue.

The copper box was found in the base of a Spanish-American War monument on Main Street when the statue was moved recently for construction.

The contents of the box were revealed at the Buffalo Historical Museum on Friday. The box held eight newspapers from May 29, 1920, along with the first annual report of the city Planning Committee, a 48-star American flag and some other items.

Mayor Byron Brown noted the city’s population at the time was more than 506,000 people. It’s around 260,000 now.
