BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota officials say an additional $1 million grant and loan package will be given to the Belle Fourche Irrigation District for system upgrades.

The Rapid City Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1ltPOfM ) that the State Water Resources Management System grant was approved by the South Dakota Board of Water and Natural Resources.

The Belle Fourche district is the outgrowth of the Orman Dam and Belle Fourche Reservoir project built in 1911.

The dam and canal system was initially built with horse and steam power.

Upgrades under the current project include dredging and other improvements.

The funding includes a $500,000 grant and $500,000 low-interest loan.
