HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (AP) - A Hardeeville hospital will offer maternity services this spring, saving women from long drives to deliver their babies.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (https://bit.ly/1hFrBPC ) that Coastal Carolina Hospital is adding a new women’s unit by late spring. Hospital spokeswoman Carolyn Grant says the wing will have 16 beds and cost about $1.4 million. The hospital now has 41 beds.

Currently moms-to-be from Jasper County generally have to drive 30 minutes or more to hospitals in either Beaufort, Hilton Head Island or Savannah, Ga.

The hospital expects about 1,000 babies a year will be born in the new women’s unit.
