RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - Police in Southern California say an officer flagged down by a frantic mother saved the life of a baby who was choking on a plastic bottle cap.

Riverside police said in a statement that firefighters were headed to the home where the 8-month-old baby girl was choking and turning blue Saturday, but the mother ran outside and flagged down Officer Janet Ramos, who didn’t know about the emergency call.

Police say Ramos took the girl from her mother, noticed the blockage and started pounding the baby’s back.

When that didn’t work, Ramos used her fingers to pull the bottle cap from deep in the baby’s throat.

The baby suddenly resumed breathing and crying.

Paramedics soon arrived and took the child to the hospital, where she was found to be fine.
