MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) - Police say a man was found dead following a standoff in Martinsville.

Martinsville interim Police Chief Eddie Cassady tells media outlets that the standoff followed several robberies on Sunday. He wouldn’t say whether the man was a suspect in those incidents.

Officers investigating the robberies went to a house Sunday afternoon. They didn’t find anything but returned later after receiving a call that a subject was in the house. They announced they were entering and heard a gunshot.

Cassady says police surrounded the house and used battering rams to break down the front door and remove a window. When no one came out, a state police bomb robot was sent into the residence. A SWAT team then entered the residence and found the man dead in a back room.
