JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - In less than an hour Saturday, the Sitka Sound sac roe herring fishery came to an end with nearly 4,000 tons harvested just offshore from downtown Sitka.

KCAW reports (https://bit.ly/1rYWfJ6) it took only 45 minutes Saturday afternoon for the 48 permit holders to bring in the massive catch. It brought this year’s total catch to 17,200 tons. It was 900 tons over the guideline harvest level, according to preliminary estimates by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

For the last two years, seiners failed to reach the harvest limits.

Final harvest numbers will be known once processing is completed.
